Administration for Community Living 2020 Fall Prevention Grantees

It’s official! Two organizations that we have partnered with in the past are awarded the Administration for Community Living 2020 Fall Prevention Grant!
AltaPointe Health is Alabama’s largest health and human services organization that improves the health and wellness of people living with mental illness, intellectual disabilities and substance use disorders. Altapointe provides services to more than 30,000 adults and children each year in Baldwin, Clay, Coosa, Mobile, Randolph, Talladega and Washington counties.
Offering SAIL During the COVID – 19 Pandemic
We have received requests for guidance on offering the SAIL fitness class during this time of social distancing. Here are our recommendations:
- Pause the SAIL Program for new participants
- Virtual delivery (such as Facebook Live and Zoom) is allowable for participants who are familiar with the SAIL fitness class
- Online training for persons interested in learning more about the SAIL Program, or for persons who are interested in leading a SAIL Program continues to be available through Pierce College.
Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) – Minneapolis

We have had numerous people from Minnesota in the online SAIL Program Leader training in the last few years, and three of our Certified Trainers for SAIL Program Leaders live in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. It was definitely time for us to make a site visit to Minnesota and see what was happening. We contacted our friends from RSVP (the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) in Minneapolis. RSVP is a Senior Corps program from the Corporation of National and Community Service that engages adults 55+ to meet community needs.
Fort Defiance Indian Health Board, Inc.

We were recently contacted by Jenn Gorman, Director of Wellness & Fitness for the Fort Defiance Indian Health Board, Inc. (FDIHB) to conduct an onsite SAIL Program Leader training in Arizona.
FDIHB is one of six service units in the Navajo Indian health care system that serves 45,000 people in a geographic region that is 2,000+ square miles. FDIHB has received frequent requests for teaching exercise classes and providing education. Jenn noticed that the wellness staff often provided this type of service for 8 weeks,
